Ireland has been in a midst of a construction upturn over the past few years, with Dublin bouncing back first and hitting the hardest.
Dublin saw 70 cranes used for construction dawn the horizon, visible from the seventh floor of the Irish Times building on June 1st. Dublin has saw a progressive rise in construction, rapidly noticed by the newly evolved skyline of construction cranes above the city.
May saw a total of 66 cranes, in February 34 cranes were recorded with June seeing 70 cranes visible, a rapid rise on both February and May’s count.
It appears construction works are relatively concentrated south of Liffey, which hosts a total of 58 construction cranes, a 4% rise on the total recorded in April. North of Liffey 12 cranes can be seen, up 20% on the total recorded in March.
Dublin’s Building Boom Ahead of Brexit
Ireland’s economy is expected to continue its recovery, with Dublin being shaped to become a metropolitan city, taking on London levels to house, cater for and accommodate the corporate, private and public sector foot-fall and relocation anticipated following Brexit.
Construction is booming for office blocks, retail developments, building upgrades and extensions, commercial property and accommodation for workers and employees to reside.
While construction has been strong and dominant in terms of commercial and corporate developments, what appears to be cause for concern is the much slower progression of property development.
Ireland’s total housing stock as recorded in the 2016 CSO Census increased just 4%, which equates to 8,800 property units. When compared to 2011 records, which showed an increase of 12.7% from 2006-2011, has caused concern in regards to housing stock in Ireland and the expected exodus of corporate relocations from London to Dublin.
